Summer English 103 and 104

  • English 103 is for any student currently enrolled in English 101.
  • English 104 is for any student currently enrolled in English 102.
  • Enroll via MyUTK (MY.UTK.EDU).

In Summer 2021, English 103 and 104 will meet online.

Past students have been overwhelmingly happy with the way these courses help them improve their writing, do better in English 101 or 102, and how easy it is to attend and meet with tutors online. They said these courses helped them keep up with their work, and they loved the flexibility of being able to choose their own attendance and tutoring times. They also enjoyed their exclusive access to numerous short recorded workshop videos and Canvas resources designed especially to help with English 101 or 102 assignments.

The requirements are easy to complete, are designed to support you as you work on your English course assignments, and are flexible in terms of time to suit your schedule:

  1. Complete the initial course orientation online (on Canvas) in the first week.
  2. Talk online with a tutor from the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center at least once a week. These conversations usually last about 30 minutes and may be about anything related to your writing process and your English writing assignments.
    • There’s no limit on how many tutor meetings you can have. (Students not in this course are limited to 1 hour of help per week.) Talking with tutors is the best way this course can help you, and evidence shows a relationship between more tutor meetings and higher GPA.
  3. Attend online for 1 hour per week at any time you choose and work on your English coursework—there’s no extra work assigned. Past students have reported liking the way this requirement helps them with time management and keeping up with their work.

You have exclusive access to a variety of short recorded workshops on topics such as finding sources in UT Libraries databases, integrating sources into an argument, MLA citations, editing and proofreading effectively, and more. (All are optional, not required.)

All the details for how to complete the requirements, including how to make and attend tutor meeting appointments, are explained on the course’s CANVAS HOME PAGE. Once you enroll, look there to get started.

This is a 1-credit elective with S/NC grading.

In Summer, there’s a charge for the additional 1 credit hour for English 103 or 104 (see One Stop’s fee chart for the amount). The benefits include unlimited individualized help throughout the term (and there’s a demonstrated connection between more tutor meetings and higher GPA), exclusive access to specially designed recorded workshops and resources.  We think that like past past students have reported, you’ll find the course worth it!
