Develop your confidence and skill as a writer during your first-year English composition course by taking English 103 or 104–helpful, flexible courses with no extra cost and no extra work!
The English 103 and 104 “Writing Workshop” electives help ALL students in first-year English composition courses. Getting regular feedback from friendly writing consultants helps you produce the best possible quality of writing: 90% of students who take a Writing Workshop course receive the grade of B or higher in their English composition course!

How does the course help me in English Composition?
90% of students who meet 4 times with a writing consultant receive the grade of B or higher in their first-year English composition course, according to the past 5 years of data.
You get feedback that’s relevant to you as an individual writer. Trained writing consultants work with you on a one-to-one basis.
The course helps you stay on track with your English composition assignments throughout the semester–your time management will become a lot easier!

What are the course requirements?
The requirements are easy to complete and designed to suit your individual schedule:
- Meet in person or online at least 4 times with your writing consultant during the semester.
- Attend online for an hour per week, at any time you choose, to work on assignments from your English composition course.
- Complete a short, informal reflection about yourself as a writer.
How is the course graded?
The course is graded as S/NC (Satisfactory/No Credit) and does not affect your UTK GPA. You receive 1 hour of elective credit with the S grade.
How much does the course cost?
The course does not cost extra for anyone registered full-time.
Who are the writing consultants?
Our writing consultants are also students, both undergraduate and graduate, who come from various departments all across campus. They go through a year-long training to prepare them to work with writers like you! They’re here to talk with you about your writing and offer you helpful feedback.
What is a meeting with a writing consultant like?
You and the writing consultant set the agenda collaboratively! Your writing consultant can help you at any stage of the writing process. Meetings can include:
- Discussing course concepts and assigned readings
- Reviewing the assignment sheet for an upcoming paper
- Brainstorming topics
- Locating credible sources
- Developing a research plan
- Receiving feedback on a completed draft
- Assistance with sentence-level correctness and citations

Placement information: If your ACT Composite score is equal to or below 23 or if your SAT Composite score is equal to or below 1130, you’re required to take English 103 while enrolled in English 101 or 131.
However, English 103 and 104 are recommended for ALL students with any test scores. See this page about First-year Composition courses.
