LECTURE: Supporting Graduate Students as Writers: A Framework
Monday, October 14, 3:30-5:00 pm
McClung Tower, Room 1210-11
Professor Michelle Cox from Cornell University will talk about the transition graduate students make from receiving knowledge from the field as undergraduates to contributing to the knowledge of a field as members of the discipline, a shift that requires students to become “disciplinary insiders” (MacDonald, 1994). The lecture will explore the challenges of graduate-level writing and propose a framework for addressing them. This lecture is part of the Rhetoric, Writing, and Linguistic Speaker Series in the Department of English and is supported by the John C. Hodges Better English Fund.
WORKSHOP: Supporting Graduate Students as Writers—Approaches to Mentorship
Tuesday, October 15, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Student Union, Room 377A
This workshop is designed for faculty who serve as chairs or advisors to graduate students in any discipline, including international graduate students whose first or strongest language is not English. It will explore ways faculty may support graduate students as they take on large writing projects, such as theses and dissertations, and will share approaches to mentorship that may be used at different points in the writing process, from invention to revision to editing. The workshop is supported by the Jim and Judi Herbert Excellence in Writing Endowment.
RSVP requested for the “Supporting Graduate Students as Writers—Approaches to Mentorship” workshop (to ensure we have adequate space for all who wish to attend).
Professor Cox is the inaugural Director of the English Language Support Office of Cornell University’s Knight Institute, and her scholarship focuses on graduate student writing, writing program administration, and second language writing. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses on writing, writing theory, and writing pedagogy; launched and directed a Writing Across the Curriculum program; and is currently developing a writing and speaking support program for international graduate and professional students.
