Integrating AI into Writing Assignments: Winter Mini-Term Faculty Seminars, 2024

Professorial, lecturer, and GTA faculty in any discipline are invited to apply to participate in one or two Winter Mini-Term seminars focusing on integrating generative AI into writing assignments: “Integrating AI into Writing Assignments,” and “Spring 2024 PowerNotes AI-Enabled Writing Pilot: Getting Started.”

Each seminar consists of two sessions: (1) an introductory session for instructors with no or limited prior knowledge/experience with the seminar topic (or for those who want a refresher), and (2) an applied workshop session. Most participants should attend both sessions of a single seminar; however, instructors with significant prior experience in the seminar topic may choose to skip the introductory session and attend the applied workshop session only.

Apply for any of the seminar sessions by January 2, 2024: https://tiny.utk.edu/JanAISeminars

  • Each session includes pre-session preparation, the session itself, and a post-session deliverable–a commitment of 5 hours total.
  • A stipend of $250 per session will be provided upon completion of the pre-session prep, attendance at the session, and the post-session deliverable. (Note: Funded Graduate Teaching Associates must request Graduate School additional pay approval in advance.)
  • Instructors may attend up to 4 sessions total.
  • Each session is limited to 20 participants.
  • Each session will be conducted in person and will not be recorded.

Seminar 1: Integrating AI into Writing Assignments

Seminar 1 / Session 1: AI and Writing Pedagogy Crash Course

Do you want to try integrating generative AI (GENAI) into one or more of your writing assignments this Spring but feel you don’t yet know enough about how to do so? Session 1 focuses on AI literacy, and you’ll  learn relevant terms and technologies related to GENAI, explore potential benefits and pitfalls of using GENAI tools during the writing process, learn how early adopters are integrating GENAI into various types of writing assignments, and engage in hands-on practice with GENAI resources.

Date & Time: January 10, 2024 | 9:30am-12:30pm

Place: Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), room 207

Stipend of $250, provided upon completion of the pre-session prep, attendance at the session, and the post-session deliverable.

Seminar 1 / Session 2: Integrating AI into your Spring Writing Assignments

Do you have a good working knowledge of generative AI and feel ready to integrate generative AI into one or more of your Spring 2024 writing assignments? In Session 2, we’ll examine cross-disciplinary, evidence-based approaches to writing assignment scaffolding that thoughtfully integrates generative AI. You’ll leave the session with a better understanding of how to navigate AI use with your students, techniques to incorporate generative AI use into different stages of the writing process students engage in while working on your assignments, and a concrete plan to use AI in at least one of your writing assignments.

Date & Time: January 17, 2024 | 9:30am-12:30pm

Place: Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), room 207

Stipend of $250, provided upon completion of the pre-session prep, attendance at the session, and the post-session deliverable.

Prerequisite–One of the following:

  • Completion of Session 1: “AI & Writing Pedagogy Crash Course,” or
  • Participation in the JAHWC’s Fall 2023 AI & Writing Pedagogy Faculty Learning Community, or
  • Proficiency with generative AI (determined by answers to questions 10, 11, and 12 on the application form)

The “Integrating AI into Writing Assignments” seminar is made possible through generous support from the Judith Anderson Herbert Excellence in Writing Endowment.

Seminar 2: Spring 2024 PowerNotes AI-Enabled Writing Pilot: Getting Started

This seminar requires attendance at both sessions, unless you participated in the Fall 2023 PowerNotes AI-Enabled Writing Pilot. Those in the Fall 2023 Pilot may attend Session 2 only–but are also welcome to attend Session 1 for a refresher, if desired.

Seminar 2 / Session 1: PowerNotes AI Basics

Are you interested in a more structured tool that was created specifically to support students’ academic reading, research, and writing and integrates AI use into the process of working on a research project? Do you want built-in transparency of your students’ use of AI throughout the writing process? This introduction to PowerNotes’s basic and AI features is for you–and will get you started participating in the Spring 2024 PowerNotes AI-Enabled Writing Pilot.

(Note: PowerNotes AI is designed to be used with digital texts, assignments that require reading as part of the overall project, and Canvas use. If your course doesn’t include these, this seminar is not for you.)

This hands-on session will provide information about PowerNotes, guidance for integrating PowerNotes into the Canvas site for your course and how to create assignments that use it, and onboarding your students to using PowerNotes.

Date & Time: January 11, 2024 | 9:30am-12:30pm

Place: Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), room 207

Stipend of $250, provided upon completion of the pre-session prep, attendance at the session, and the post-session deliverable.

Seminar 2 / Session 2: Integrating PowerNotes AI Into a Spring Writing Assignment

Are you ready to integrate PowerNotes AI into one or more of your spring courses? In this hands-on working session we will discuss generative AI and how to integrate it into at least one of your assignments, and we will create an assignment that includes use of PowerNotes’s AI features in Canvas.

Date & Time: January 18, 2024 | 9:30am-12:30pm

Place: Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), room 207

Stipend of $250, provided upon completion of the pre-session prep, attendance at the session, and the post-session deliverable.

Prerequisite–One of the following:

  • Completion of Session 1: “PowerNotes AI Basics,” or
  • Participation in Fall 2023 PowerNotes AI-Enabled Writing Pilot

Important Note: Completing the process of integrating PowerNotes into one or more of your writing assignments and participating in the PowerNotes pilot may take additional time beyond Session 2. Additional stipend funding for up to 3 additional hours will be available for instructors to apply for following session 2.

The PowerNotes AI-Enabled Writing Pilot is made possible through generous support from the Judith Anderson Herbert Excellence in Writing Endowment, the English Department First-Year Composition Program’s Writing Fund, and the College of Arts and Science’s AI Educational Campaign.
