Spring 2025 First-Year Composition Workshop Series

Are you in a First-Year Composition Course? Attend our new workshop series this semester!

If you’re enrolled in English 103 or 104, you will get your weekly attendance credit by coming to any of the workshops.

“Write Here, Write Now: Building Your Academic Writing Skills” is a dynamic workshop series designed to help you enhance your academic writing abilities. The 4-part series covers important topics like effective time management, writing thesis statements, source integration, and primary source analysis. Each workshop provides practical strategies and techniques to improve essential academic writing skills.


February 4, 2:30-3:30, HSS 212: How to Manage Your Time and Start Writing

Do you ever struggle with procrastination? We know it can be difficult to begin a daunting writing assignment. That’s why this workshop will cover useful time-management techniques to help you get started. You’ll have the chance to reflect on your habits, discover helpful tech tools, learn how to prioritize tasks, and start a plan for your next assignment.

February 18, 2:30-3:30, HSS 212: How to Craft an Effective Thesis

A well-crafted thesis statement is essential for guiding the direction and focus of any academic paper. During this workshop, you’ll learn the qualities of an effective thesis statement and practice revising and refining examples.

March 11, 2:30-3:30, HSS 212: How to Integrate Sources Effectively into Your Writing

Sustaining a solid argument requires external sources, but how do you seamlessly integrate them into your writing? This workshop will explore that question as we discuss the reasons for using evidence and the possible ways to incorporate outside information into your text.

April 8, 2:30-3:30, HSS 212: How to Analyze Primary Sources

As researchers, we often examine artifacts and documents to better understand their historical context. In this workshop, we will define primary sources and discuss strategies for how you can critically evaluate and interpret them.
