Writing Assistance for Nursing Graduate Students

A Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center writing consultant is available for UTK Nursing graduate students to answer your questions and provide guidance about any aspect of your writing, including style and grammar. We’ll talk with you about what you can do to revise and improve your written documents such as coursework papers and proposals.

Up to two 30-minute or one 60-minute online consultations per student per week (pending availability). Appointments may be made between 2-7 days in advance via WCOnline. Upon occasion, appointments may be made farther in advance via email with the writing consultant (see writing consultant information below).

Please note the following:

  • Make appointments early in the process of working on your project; it is more helpful for most writers to get help earlier in the process than waiting until the draft is complete and then seeking feedback. You do not need a completed full draft to talk with us!
  • For those times when you want review of a completed draft, make sure you have allowed enough time before the due date for the writing consultant to work with you effectively.
    • It is not possible for the writing consultant to provide meaningful suggestions on long drafts in a one-hour meeting two or three days before the due date.
    • Plan on a series of appointments that focus on specific parts of your draft during each separate meeting. (Keep in mind that currently, we can only provide one hour of help per week per student, and that is pending availability, as well. So, plan ahead!)
    • Often, the consultant’s suggestions for one part of a draft can be applied to other parts. Part of the conversation will be about prioritizing the most important things to focus on during the meeting.
  • If you’re revising a paper that your instructor has already given you feedback on, attach the instructor’s feedback so the writing consultant can get a good idea of what to focus on. Most importantly, make every effort to respond to your instructor’s feedback before meeting with the writing consultant. We’re happy to discuss your suggested revisions and guide you further after you have attempted to address the issues first.

To make an appointment:

First, go to https://utk.mywconline.com and select the UTK Nursing Graduate Programs schedule. (First-time users of WCOnline must register for a free account.)

  • Available times are shown in white boxes.
  • Adjust for 30 or 60 minutes as desired (and as available).
  • Answer all requested questions. Provide the consultant as much detail as possible about your writing situation. Tell us what your assignment is and explain exactly what you would like to discuss in your 30- or 60-minute session. (We can’t discuss everything in such a short amount of time. We want to know what your priorities are for the conversation.)
  • Attach a document in advance whenever possible. (You also will be able to upload a document during the appointment.)
  • Click “Create Appointment,” and set a reminder/alert in your calendar.
  • Read the confirmation and reminder emails you receive.

FOR GROUP APPOINTMENTS:

  1. ALL members of the group should register for a free account in WCOnline.
  2. ONE person from the group should make a 60-minute appointment in WCOnline. (Do not make 30-minute appointments for groups.)
  3. Then, email writingcenter@utk.edu to let us know that there will be more than one person joining the appointment. Include the names, emails, and Nursing program (DNP with specialization area, or PhD) for each group member.
  4. We will email you and each of the group members a separate ZOOM link to meet with the writing consultant.
  5. Keep the original WCOnline appointment in our system for record-keeping purposes, but meet using the ZOOM link that is emailed to you.

Note: If no times are available in WCOnline that match the group’s schedule, follow the instructions below for arranging an appointment via email. Be sure all members of the group have a WCOnline account, and let the writing consultant know the names, emails, and program (DNP with specialization area, or PhD) of all members of the group appointment.

How to attend an appointment booked via WCOnline:

Go to https://utk.mywconline.com. Open your appointment box and click “Start or Join Online Consultation.”

Cancel at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot make it.

Late cancelations (less than 24 hours in advance) and no-shows are reported to the College of Nursing, which funds this service.

To cancel, log in at https://utk.mywconline.com, open your appointment box, and click ‘Cancel.’

If no times are available in WCOnline that fit your schedule:

First, make sure you have created an account in WCOnline, https://utk.mywconline.com, and have checked there for an available time!

If no time in WCOnline fits your schedule, contact our writing consultant to find a mutually agreeable time. Include your name, email, and Nursing program (DNP with specialization area, or PhD).

The consultant can only work a certain number of hours each week, so it may not be possible to arrange something in the current week. Plan ahead! (It is sometimes possible to arrange an appointment more than a week in advance via email; contact the writing consultant to request this.)
